This paper presents approaches for building new knowledge using emerging methods and big data technologies together with archival practices. Two cases studies have been considered. The first one called HERBADROP is concerned with preservation and analysis of herbarium images. The second one called EUROPEANA investigates how to facilitate the re-use of cultural heritage language resources for research purposes. The common point between these two case studies is that they are both concerned with the use of valuable heritage resources within the EUDAT (European Data) infrastructure. HERBADROP leverages on the data services provided by EUDAT for long-term preservation, while EUROPEANA leverages on EUDAT to achieve citability and persistent identification of cultural heritage datasets. EUDAT1 is an initiative of some of the main European data centers and together with community research infrastructure organisations, to build a common eInfrastructure for general research data management. In this paper, we show how technologcal trends may offer some new research potential in the domain of computational archival science in particular appraising the challenges of producing quality, meaning, knowledge and value from quantity, tracing data and analytic provenance across complex big data platforms and knowledge production ecosystems.

This course shall provide the Attendees with a focus on the optimal manner in which to design outside plant (OSP) networks to provide service to the Subscribers. It assumes the Attendees has a core knowledge of fiber optics, outside plant, and FTTX architecture, however shall conduct a baseline refresher on the topics. Course will discuss in detail the manner in which optimal fiber-to-the-X (FTTX) networks are designed, based on a flexible growth pattern (take-rate), thus allowing for maximum optimization of optical distribution network (ODN) ports on the optical line terminal (OLT). Course shall address different construction techniques and materials that are currently being use, as well as those technologies that are on the rise that could represent cost savings.

Scientific research practices regularly adopt new technologies and platforms in an effort to increase information timeliness, sharing and discoverability. There are many initiatives related to open data, open code, open access, open collections, composing the topic of Open Science in academia. Being open has two levels of meanings. The first is to make the data, code, sample collections and publications, etc. freely accessible online. The other is the annotation and connection between those resources to establish the provenance information for reproducible scientific research. In this paper we present our work on a web portal for the Deep Carbon Observatory (DCO) community. The DCO is a 10-year (2009-2019) initiative to intensify global attention and scientific effort in the burgeoning field of deep carbon science. Inspired by guiding questions such as “how much carbon does Earth contain?”, “where is it?” and “what can deep carbon tell us about origins?” more than 1000 scientists across the world are actively participating in the DCO community. The DCO web portal is a research collaboration website developed to keep track of all researchers, organizations, instruments, field sites, and research outputs related to the DCO community. We intend for the DCO web portal to be a knowledge portal - adopting state-of-the-art semantic technologies to support various stages of the scientific process within and beyond the DCO community.

The digital evolution of our society is increasingly affecting and enabling research in the humanities where digital resources and cultural datasets are now being considered as valuable research material. This evolution has increased the need for infrastructures and web environments where researchers from the humanities can collaboratively work on their data and even actively involve citizens. But while this digital evolution also brings new opportunities for service providers, there are many challenges to overcome when collaborating with humanities research groups in the development of their research infrastructures. At LIBIS, a service provider for information solutions at the University of Leuven (KU Leuven - Belgium), we have experienced some of the main issues being the sometimes limited technological knowhow of the researchers, but especially the lack of resources for the continued maintenance and support of the digital humanities infrastructures and datasets after the project funding period has ended. This presentation focusses on a number of Humanities infrastructure projects in which library, archival and museum tools have been used in combination with other open source and proprietary systems to provide a sustainable and innovative environment for different humanities research groups. We like to share our experiences on the active collaboration with the researchers in the writing of project proposals and the design and development of their infrastructures as well as provide a set of recommendations concerning the selection of tools and standards to guarantee a long lasting collaboration.

The EOSC faces as well technical, social and economic challenges on interoperability. These have to be overcome in order to provide an efficient EOSC architecture. Some solutions are in place in some domains, but these have to be expanded to the cross-disciplinary and/or international level. We will summarize what the results of our studies within the EOSCpilot on interoperability and FAIR data sharing are. Then we will discuss openly solutions, opportunities and showstoppers with respect to an interoperable and FAIR EOSC with key experts in the field.

Panel at the PEARC 2017 event in New Orleans, July 11-13. Panelists were: Gregory Newby, Chief Technology Officer, Compute Canada; Florian Berberich, Member of the Board of Directors PRACE aisbl; Gergely Sipos, Customer and Technical Outreach Manager, EGI Foundation; and John Towns, Director of Collaborative eScience Programs, National Center for Supercomputing Applications. Panel abstract: How might the international community of research computing users and stakeholders benefit from knowledge sharing among national- or international-scale research computing organizations and providers? It is common for large-scale investments in research computing systems, services and support to be guided and funded with government oversight and centralized planning. There are many commonalities, including stakeholder relations, outcomes reporting, long-range strategic planning, and governance. What trends exist currently, and how might information sharing and collaboration among resource providers be beneficial? Is there desire to form a partnership, or to build upon existing relationships? Participants in this panel will include personnel involved in US, Canadian and European research computing jurisdictions.

On 29 January 2020 ARCHIVER launched its Request for Tender with the purpose to award several Framework Agreements and work orders for the provision of R&D for hybrid end-to-end archival and preservation services that meet the innovation challenges of European Research communities, in the context of the European Open Science Cloud. The tender was closed on 28 April 2020 and 15 R&D bids were submitted, with consortia that included 43 companies and organisations. The best bids have been selected and will start the first phase of the ARCHIVER R&D (Solution Design) in June 2020. On Monday 8 June the selected consortia for the ARCHIVER design phase have been announced during a Public Award Ceremony starting at 14.00 CEST. In light of the COVID-19 outbreak and the and consequent movement restrictions imposed in several countries, the event has been organised as a webinar, virtually hosted by Port d’Informació Científica (PIC), a member of the Buyers Group of the ARCHIVER consortium. The Kick-off marks the beginning of the Solution Design Phase.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
